Médecins Sans Frontières Belgium mission in Yemen is recruiting 2 MIDWIVES.
Other suitable candidates may be considered for inclusion in a reserve pool for
future Midwife vacancies, in accordance with MSF recruitment procedures
- Location:
Aden Project – PHCCs and outreach activities in Aden and Lahj
governorates, with possible mobility to other project locations depending
on operational needs
- Contract
duration: Six (6) months, with the possibility of extension

Main Purpose:
Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies,
doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to MSF obstetrical
and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring
standards and under supervision of a specialist doctor, in order to ensure
their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.
Accountabilities:
- Ensuring
the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family
planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC 1 and CEmONC 2), neonatal and
reproductive tract infections and Fistula care in accordance with MSF
Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation
of standardised protocols.
- Where
PMTCT is implemented, ensuring implementation of the PMTCT protocol in the
ANC/delivery and PNC consultations (pre counselling, test and post
counselling
- Ensuring
hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are
met according to MSF specifications.
- Performing
cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following
the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of
malfunctioning.
- Guaranteeing
a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity
activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders.
- Properly
following up all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, informing
mothers and relatives about importance of breast feeding, vaccination and
possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
- Ensuring
patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected.
- Supervising
that administrative procedures of admissions and hospitalizations comply
with MSF protocols , as well as verify patients are properly informed and
receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.
- Participating
in the organisation of the ward in collaboration with other midwifes and
the maternity ward supervisor. Ensure transfer of relevant information to
the next shift team (specially identifying risk cases).
- According
to MSF protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently Manage
obstetric emergencies; identify cases needing referral and send them in
time, clean up the newborn, executing and registering first neo-natal
medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.),
detecting possible anomalies/infections of the newborn and reporting them
to the doctor, in order to ensure successful interventions Supervises the
use of drugs, facilities and obstetric material, in order to ensure, in
accordance with number of patients and prescriptions, a rational use as
well as pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept under
appropriate conditions and above minimum safety point. 1 BEmONC =
basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = Administration of
antibiotics, oxytocics, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta,
removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal
delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor and newborn care including
neonatal resuscitation. 2 CEmONC = comprehensive obstetric and
neonatal care = the full package of BEmONC Plus; surgery (caesarean
section, hysterectomy, laparotomy), safe blood transfusion and care to
sick and low birth weight newborns.
MSF Section/Context Specifics
1. Antenatal Care (ANC) & Risk Management
- Conduct
antenatal care consultations in accordance with MSF protocols and national
guidelines, including maternal assessment, physical examination, fetal
monitoring, routine screening and MUAC assessment where applicable.
- Identify
high-risk pregnancies and recognize obstetric danger signs at an early
stage.
- Provide
initial stabilization within the Midwife’s scope of practice and
facilitate timely referral of complicated cases to appropriate BEmONC or
CEmONC facilities.
- Provide
health education and counselling to pregnant women on birth preparedness,
maternal nutrition, hygiene, danger signs during pregnancy and when to
seek urgent care.
- Ensure
appropriate follow-up of pregnant women requiring closer monitoring and
refer cases needing further medical assessment.
2. Postnatal Care (PNC)
- Provide
postnatal consultations to mothers and newborns in accordance with MSF
protocols and national guidelines.
- Monitor
maternal recovery after delivery, identify postpartum danger signs and
manage minor complications within the Midwife’s scope of practice.
- Provide
wound care and other basic postnatal interventions when required and
according to established protocols.
- Assess
newborn health, monitor vital signs and identify signs requiring referral
or medical assessment.
- Provide
counselling on exclusive breastfeeding, newborn care, maternal hygiene,
nutrition and postpartum danger signs.
- Ensure
timely referral of mothers or newborns presenting complications beyond the
Midwife’s scope of practice.
3. Family Planning Services
- Provide
rights-based, confidential and non-discriminatory family planning
counselling, supporting clients to make informed reproductive health
choices.
- Provide
family planning methods in accordance with MSF protocols, national
guidelines and the Midwife’s scope of practice.
- Perform
insertion and removal of subdermal contraceptive implants when
appropriately trained, competent and authorized to do so.
- Identify
and manage common contraceptive side effects within the Midwife’s scope of
practice and refer complicated cases when necessary.
- Ensure
appropriate follow-up of family planning clients and provide clear
information on method use, side effects and warning signs.
4. STI / STD Management
- Provide
syndromic management of common sexually transmitted infections in
accordance with MSF protocols, national guidelines and the Midwife’s scope
of practice.
- Conduct
appropriate screening and clinical assessment of clients presenting
symptoms suggestive of STIs.
- Provide
or administer treatment when authorized and according to established
protocols.
- Refer
cases requiring further diagnostic investigation, medical assessment or
specialized care.
- Provide
counselling on STI prevention, treatment adherence, safer sexual practices
and partner management.
- Maintain
strict confidentiality and ensure respectful, non-discriminatory care for
all clients.
5. Mobile Clinic & Clinical Management
- Participate
in the preparation, organization and implementation of SRH activities
within the Mobile Clinic.
- Ensure
that the necessary SRH materials, medicines, family planning commodities
and medical supplies required for assigned activities are available before
departure.
- Monitor
stock availability related to SRH activities and promptly inform the
relevant responsible person of replenishment needs, shortages or
anticipated stock-outs.
- Use
medical supplies and medicines rationally and in accordance with MSF
protocols.
- Maintain
accurate and complete patient records, registers and activity data.
- Ensure
strict confidentiality of patient information and appropriate management
of medical documentation.
- Contribute
to the daily organization and smooth functioning of Mobile Clinic
activities in coordination with the medical team.
- Participate
in the identification of patients requiring referral and support the
organization of appropriate referral pathways.
- Report
relevant medical, operational or protection concerns identified during
activities to the supervisor or Project Medical Referent.
6. Health Education & Patient Support
- Provide
clear and culturally appropriate health education on maternal health,
newborn care, family planning, STI prevention and reproductive health.
- Promote
informed decision-making and respectful maternity and reproductive
healthcare.
- Ensure
that patients understand prescribed treatments, follow-up requirements and
referral instructions.
- Identify
barriers to access to care and communicate relevant concerns to the
medical team.
7. Quality of Care, Infection Prevention & Safety
- Apply
MSF medical protocols, infection prevention and control measures, hygiene
standards and standard precautions during all clinical activities.
- Ensure
appropriate use, cleaning and safe handling of medical equipment used
during consultations.
- Identify
and report any clinical incident, safety concern or deviation from
established protocols.
- Participate
in activities aimed at improving the quality and continuity of patient
care.
8. Data, Reporting & Team Collaboration
- Ensure
accurate and timely recording of medical activities and patient data in
the relevant registers and tools.
- Contribute
to the compilation and verification of activity data when requested.
- Participate
in team meetings, medical briefings, debriefings and case discussions.
- Collaborate
closely with Medical Doctors, Nurses, Health Promotion staff, Community
Health Workers and other relevant team members.
- Support
continuity of care through appropriate communication, referral and
follow-up of patients.
- Perform
other clinical or operational tasks related to the Midwife function,
within the scope of practice and as requested by the supervisor according
to project needs.
Education & Experience
- Essential:
recognized Midwifery qualification. Desirable: Bachelor’s degree in
Midwifery.
- Essential:
at least two years of relevant professional experience as a Midwife.
Languages
- Minimum
English level: B1
