About our Country Program/ Regional Programs

RI in the Middle East has programs in seven countries - Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Türkiye, Yemen, and now OPT with a focus on the 4 main RI sectors: WASH, Health and Nutrition, Education and Livelihoods. Relief International has been providing humanitarian aid in Yemen since 2010, offering various services like health, nutrition, water, sanitation, livelihoods, and protection across the country. They focus on helping vulnerable people, including internally displaced persons, returnees, and host communities. RI also provides reproductive health, protection, and gender-based violence responses in specific areas. 

2.    Job Profile

The WASH Assistant plays a key role in ensuring the successful implementation of WASH activities, driving sustainable and high-quality water, sanitation, and hygiene services in the RI supported HFs.
Reporting to the Project Coordinator, you will provide technical expertise and oversight in the implementation, and monitoring of WASH activities. Your focus will be on enhancing program impact by ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and alignment with health facility needs. You will also support the rehabilitation of health facilities infrastructure, and WASH facilities within healthcare centers.

3.    Key Responsibilities 

  • Supervision of WASH focal persons working in health facilities and following up on their daily performance to ensure implementation of activities related to water, sanitation, and hygiene systems in line with approved technical plans and standards.
  • Monitoring the implementation of physical, chemical, and biological water quality tests in health facilities by supervising the monitors assigned to perform these tests directly, and ensuring that results meet technical standards
  • Following up on the operation of water and sanitation systems or medical waste disposal facilities (such as incinerators or medical waste disposal systems) by overseeing the monitors directly responsible for their operation, and ensuring compliance with technical and environmental standards
  • Overseeing the implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols in health facilities in coordination with IPC committees and medical teams, through guiding and supervising the monitors directly responsible for implementing these measures, and ensuring health staff comply with established procedures.
  • Monitoring processes of collecting, sorting, and transporting/incineration of medical waste, by supervising the monitors carrying out these tasks, and reviewing records and reports to ensure compliance with health and environmental procedures
  • Provide training on appropriate WASH, medical waste disposal, IPC and other related fields to WASH teams and other medical teams in the HFs 
  • Following up on the availability of cleaning, disinfection, and IPC supplies in health facilities by reviewing monitors’ field reports and ensuring these materials are adequately available and properly managed according to established procedures.
  • Conduct regular assessment of the infrastructure of HFs and WASH facilities to identify and propose rehabilitation or maintenance need. 
  • Develop designs and BOQ for rehabilitation activities as well as supervise and coordinate the rehabilitation work ensuring compliance with technical specifications and industry standards.
  • Maintaining continuous coordination with project coordinator and MEAL team to develop effective mechanisms for monitoring and follow-up, and ensuring the quality of implemented activities
  • Preparing and submitting periodic technical reports including achievements, challenges, and recommendations for improvement.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local authorities, community representatives, and partner organizations to ensure effective project execution.
  • Facilitate collaboration with local stakeholders to improve information sharing and resource allocation for WASH programs.

4.    Person Specification

Skills, knowledge and expertise required for the role. 

Essential criteria 

  • A university degree in civil or water engineering or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in implementing WASH projects, with additional experience in solar energy project management being an asset.
  • Solid knowledge of humanitarian standards and the regulatory framework of the WASH sector.
  • Excellent skills in report writing, team management, and partner communication.
  • Ability to work in challenging field environments and manage priorities effectively.

Desirable criteria

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Fluency in Arabic and proficiency in English.
  • Excellent time management skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other relevant software.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Capability to operate effectively in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional responsibilities and work irregular hours.
  • Maintain professional and personal conduct that upholds the credibility of the international relief organization and does not compromise its humanitarian mission
